LOCATION
Spotsylvania County is situated in central Virginia midway between the state capital at Richmond and the nation's capital at Washington, D. C. both of which are approximately 50 miles distant via Interstate 95. Bordered on the north by the Rappahannock River, Spotsylvania County lies adjacent to the historic city of Fredericksburg.
The community has long served as a center for industry and commerce owing to its strategic position as a crossroads for highway, rail, and water-based transportation. Spotsylvania County is part of the Washington-Baltimore Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMSA).

GOVERNMENT
Spotsylvania County has a County Administrator and a seven-member Board of  Supervisors.  The county has a comprehensive plan and zoning and subdivision ordinances. Spotsylvania is the county seat. There are no incorporated towns within the county.

COMMUNITY FACILITIES
Medical care is provided at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. This 310-bed, $84 million facility includes private rooms for all patients; separate critical-care units for medical, surgical, and cardiac patients; ten operating rooms; a helipad near the emergency department; and a 200-seat auditorium.
The hospital is the center of the 70-acre Mary Washington Hospital Medical Campus, which also includes Snowden at Fredericksburg, a 60-bed mental health facility, and Snowden House, which houses the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation. 

The Tompkins-Martin Medical Plaza is a professional office building attached to the hospital.  Over 130 physicians, representing more than 20 medical and surgical specialties, serve the area.
Five nursing homes offer extended care to the elderly in the community.

Sixty-five churches representing various Protestant denominations are located within Spotsylvania County. Fredericksburg has a Jewish synagogue, as well as Catholic and additional Protestant churches. 

Spotsylvania houses a branch of the Rappahannock Regional Library at the Courthouse, with the main facility located in Fredericks-burg.
The library system maintains a 143,000 volume collection and conducts a variety of adult and child programs.

A wide range of shopping choices are available to residents. Spotsylvania Mall, located on Route 3, houses over 100 stores and is the major regional retail center for the Fredericksburg area.
Also on Rt. 3 is Central Park, which has a vast amount of, stores over hundreds of acres.  Seven other shopping centers and numerous neighborhood convenience centers serve the growing retail trade in the county.

The historic center of Fredericksburg also offers a wide assortment of specialty, craft and antique shops, and entertainment in an attractive, restored, 18th-century setting.
